Daniel Simmons Sculpts North American Meditation Retreats Published: Jan 5, 09 Comments: 1 Views: 1,599 Daniel Simmon’s “Visions for a Contemporary Ruin” project aims to create a new type of building in North American Culture. His interwoven sculptures are modern day meditation pagodas. “This structure is raw form only - it has no heating, cooling or lighting systems and as such is not conventionally habitable,” he says. “Owned by no one, it is sited in a public, open place, offering a forum for inner contemplation and introspection. It is structurally porous both to visitors who may pass through and linger at will, and wind, rain, heat, cold. Natural illumination pervades the structure. The floor may be open, allowing soil and vegetation to evolve into the structure’s confines.” Bringing to mind the ruins of antiquity whose decay inflicts on its visitors and surrounding landscape, the contemporary versions strive to interplay with its form.
