Artist Tauba Auerbach and design studio Assembly collaborate on a typographic twenty-four hour clock. Auerbach is an experienced sign painter and has a longtime fascination with typography. The theme of this modern clock is overcoming limits to communication, representation and perception.
She explores her fraught relationship with time and the idea that twenty-four hour clocks forces her to stop and think about what time it is. She says, “I can’t just glance at it and know what time it is. I have to think.” The overall theme of this clock is that it is incredibly difficult to read. The twenty-four hour numbers are in roman numerals and situated very close together. You could be looking at this clock for a quite a long time just reading it. Thus, this clock continues human’s never-ending struggle with time.
