Pets is a poignant photo series, captured by Tokyo-based photographer Kuraya Takashi, that depicts the hundreds of missing pet posters that line the streets of the Japanese capital. The posters captured are weather-beaten and captured up close.

Upon stumbling upon the posters by purely following his gut and without a specific plan, Takashi then constructed narratives based on the sentences accompanying the photos in the posters. While the photos once captured moments of play and affection, they now carry a weight of sadness, urgency and regret.

Interestingly, these missing pet poster photos are accompanied by strangely worded captions that are created by running the posters' original sentences through Google Translate from Japanese to English and back to Japanese. The result is a jumble of words that carry some meaning but are confusing and difficult to understand.

As a result, the words and images offer an abstract tone and an underlying sense of hopeful sorrow.
