Man vs. Machine: Human Guides Organizing The Web [Edit]

While Google’s machines are busy indexing the entire web, humans are busy organizing the best links and resources.  One day soon, it’s likely we’ll see human guided search for every major search topic.

Spammers and marketers have been cluttering the Web for years.  But with new technologies like Blogger that make it easy for anyone to throw up a Web site and make money from Google Adsense in minutes, the problem is reaching epic proportions.

Now a new movement is reemerging called human guided search.  Real people are searching for the very best sites, content, and resources and indexing the Web by hand to filter out the junk, spam and marketing clutter.

Reminicant of the Yahoo! search directory from the dawn of the Web or the DMOZ project, human guided search is starting to catch on, especially for topics like health.  Here’s just one example of a new guide program from OrganizedWisdom.com focused on organizing the world’s best health wisdom: http://wisdom.blogs.com/theguideprogram.

Exactly - while Google took over "search" in a big way, projects like DMOZ or the Yahoo! directory and about.com's guided topical search lost their stronghold. However, the human factor has rebounded, as typified by the rise of WikiPedia. Very interesting trend.
