The Lokomat, a system developed by Hocoma AG, is a device for patients on post stroke by making their leg muscles stronger, and by let them gain more muscle mass than a control group. The Lokomat System uses high quality computer controlled motors which are integrated in the gait orthosis at each hip and knee joint. The system consists of the Lokomat (robotic gait orthosis) and the Lokobasis (body weight support system). It is used in combination with a Woodway treadmill.
"The Lokomat® is the first driven gait orthosis that assists walking movements of gait-impaired patients on a treadmill. With this automated process, physical strain on therapists can be relieved, training sessions can be longer, the therapy is more efficient and patients achieve their training goals faster. Today, automated locomotion therapy is used to improve mobility in individuals following stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. The Lokomat® has been developed through an intensive cooperation with the renowned rehabilitation center Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland."
