You’ve been thinking about laser weapons since you first watched Star Wars.  Now the US Government is making laser weapons the next big thing.  This will help them with all of their terrorist problems.. Er no wait, maybe it won’t.  Still, anything with a laser is futuristic.

From Giz Magazine:
The United States’ Airborne Laser (ABL) program sounds so fantastic that it’s hard to believe that it’s on track to be operational within two years. ABL will feature the world’s first megawatt-class laser weapon system integrated on a specially configured aircraft to autonomously detect, track and destroy all classes of hostile ballistic missiles at the speed-of-light. The ABL team and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) took a major step toward demonstrating the capability of ABL this week by successfully firing surrogate lasers from inside the aircraft. The high-energy laser, which achieved lethal power and run-times in a ground laboratory, will be installed in the ABL aircraft in 2007 to prepare for the program’s first missile shoot-down test, slated for 2008.

ABL is a modified 747 housing a huge gas Laser within its frame. Now Imagine 100 747s with Laser units, the Nose houses the firing optics for the Lasers. Or add a midships rear Pod. Wow. Goodby any missiles anyplace over the US or near allies. Problem-747 size. Maybe try a X48 Blended Wing for model 2?? Or use a old 707 type. Beside that & improved Patriot missiles we can defend from any missiles IE India, China, Pakistan into the US. Id Invest. Its your US tax$ at work. The whole plane is the Laser. Nose optics give a 180, 270 arc firing range. Can melt any metal.
