Inventors, take note of the design process for the Kyoto Box: Take a cardboard box, paint it black, add some reflective material, and collect $75,000. The Kyoto Box has won the Forum for the Future grand prize for sustainable lifestyle improvements. The super-simple idea for the Kyoto Box came from a Kenyan inventor to make solar cooking more widespread. The Kyoto Box is capable of generating enough heat to sterilize water, boil and bake foods. The Kyoto Box hopefully will replace the cutting of forests for wood fueled fires, thereby preserving a precious natural resource.  "The Kyoto Box has the potential to transform millions of lives and is a model of scalable, sustainable innovation," said Peter Madden, the forum's chief executive.
With as many people as there are in the developing world today, they can't just cook using trees - they'll finish off all the trees, said Jon Bohmer, Kyoto Energy.
