Japanese-based illustrator Kanae Sato creates drawings that star adorable-yet-mystifying little monsters and sweet-looking children who have the ability to spew stars from their mouths. Sound weird? It is, but in the most wonderful way.

Simplicity is Sato's secret weapon. Each drawing, which is composed out of geometric blotches of color, is done against a bold background. Far from refined, the drawings have a candid, abstract feel to them that might remind you of your finger-painting days (otherwise referred to as "the good old days.") The children in the drawings sport adorable bobs and triangular skirts lending them a whimsical, Louise Brooks vibe.

Despite her modest, pared-back aesthetic, there is something distinctly magical about Sato's illustrations.
