K-Y Brand Intense Launches its First Lesbian Commercial

The world of lubricants opens itself up to a more diverse audience with the K-Y Brand Intense ‘Alex and Emma’ commercial. The infamous lube company debuted its first ever lesbian ad on September 5, 2011, which was met with rave reviews from viewers, fans of the product, and LGBTQ rights groups.

What makes the K-Y Brand Intense lesbian ad so extraordinary is that it isn’t extraordinary at all—the two women aren’t over-sexualized, as is the case with many sapphic ads, and their relationship is, for lack of a better word, incredibly average. K-Y is no stranger to same-sex couple advertising, winning the 2010 GLAAD Media Award for Advertising for a commercial featuring two males. This friendly approach to advertising their “arousal gel” and lubricants has so far proven to be extremely successful, and I hope to see more of these cute and comical ads in the future.
