Justine Lai’s new series of presidential portraits titled ‘Join or Die’ is unlike any you’ve ever seen before. Eschewing the standard stiff and staid stances used in these paintings, Lai has created a series of spectacular oil on canvas works that depict each of the American presidents engaged in intimate relations—with herself! The 18” x 24” masterpieces throb with a raw and powerful energy that makes one contemplate the presidents and their public and private entities. Many consider sex and politics to be somewhat taboo, but Justine Lai’s ‘Join or Die’ helps to open a dialogue about both topics.  I use this intimacy to subvert authority, but it demands that I make myself vulnerable along with the Presidents.
