With the gas prices rising why would anyone drive.
The national price for regular unleaded gasoline hit a record $3.22 a gallon last week, and is up $1.05 since the beginning of February, according to the Energy Department. In fact, the jump in U.S. gasoline prices this year has so far cost consumers an extra $20 billion, or about $146 for each passenger car in the country.
The higher gasoline prices have hit automobile travelers the hardest and where it really hurts; in the pocketbook. The higher prices have already changed people’s driving habits and may even change their vacation plans; or worse yet, may even mean canceling their family vacation altogether. Not so fast - there may be a better alternative to driving to your favorite vacation destination; fly there! It may now be cheaper to fly than to drive. AAA reports that airline flights were cheaper this past Memorial Day holiday than a year ago, costing about 5 percent less than last year. According to the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), auto travel will continue to account for about 8 in 10 summer leisure trips, however, air travel is expected to increase more than auto travel this summer; rising about 3 percent during the June-August period. Unfortunately, along with air travel come other challenges like long check-in lines at airport ticket counters, baggage security personnel searching your bags, waiting for your luggage at baggage claim carousels and the biggest nightmare of all – lost luggage.
Some air travelers are now using the money they saved by flying instead of driving, to eliminate the hassles of traveling with baggage; they are shipping their bags in advance of their trip. Niche companies such as The Luggage Club (www.theluggageclub.com), will pick-up your luggage, golf clubs, water skis/boogie boards, wheelchairs, business equipment or just about anything else you need when traveling for business or leisure, and deliver it to your final destination.
So if you are thinking about driving to your favorite vacation spot this summer, you may want to consider flying and if you are flying, also consider shipping your bags in advance and travel hassle-free. It’s a great way to make your much needed vacation more relaxing and stress-free.
