Developments in consumer drone technology have changed filmmakers' abilities to capture their environments, and 'In the Robot Skies' is the first feature film to make complete use of that technology. The film, which will be released this October as part of the London Film Festival, was shot entirely through the use of autonomous drones.
While using drones to get sweeping, panoramic shots has been a standard practice for many filmmakers in the past few years, autonomous technology hadn't previously been capable of capturing just what a directed wanted in terms of framing, movement, et cetera. Autonomous drones have gotten to the point where they can recognize motion and follow it, however, making such a device a handy robotic cinematographer.
