To promote the healthy attitude of Granatapet pet food, the New York-based digital agency MRM//McCANN and its German office developed a totally new fitness eco system for dogs and placed the SnackBallMachine in different large cities across Germany.

By checking in with #snackball, the automatic ball launcher is activated and throws a ball in the park. The dog has to fetch the ball as fast as possible and then bring it back to their master. If the dog was fast enough, a fresh and healthy snack is automatically released from a dispenser.

By applying the new Beacon technology in the SnackBall, the team first installed an Arduino to read signals from the Snackball and track the speed and distance. By tracking the time needed and synchronizing it with the dog’s size, we can find out how fit the dog is. And if the dog is fast enough, it is rewarded with GranataPet. If not – the SnackBallMachine might be the perfect workout for lazy dogs.

Due the great success of this promotion, Markus Fuchsenthaler CEO of GranataPet decided to launch a SnackBall including an app, but without a Ball-Machine. The App and the SnackBall with Beacon-Technology enables a totally new system to track the fitness and training of dogs. The App will connect the dog owners with other similar dog owners and check the fitness-match to recommend the snack-time via a vibration-alert. In this way, the SnackBall System will be seamless integrated in our daily life. The launch will be in autumn 2014. MRM//McCANN is the software and product design and engineering partner for this project.
