In light of a failed deal to sell the brand to a Chinese automaker, General Motors has decided that it’s time the Hummer is declared dead.

The gas guzzling Hummer SUV was based on Humvee military vehicles and went into consumer production in 1992. Sales in 2009 were down 67 percent from 2008. Hummer is the third brand shutdown that is the result of GM’s bankruptcy reorganization.

This is no doubt a reason for the Earth Liberation Front, a group of militant environmentalists who set fire to Hummers in California and are suspected of dumping acid on them in Oregon, to celebrate.
