Gardasil has been approved as a vaccine to battle the Human Papilloma-Virus (HPV), the most common of all sexually transmitted diseases, and a common cause of cervical cancer. HPV is transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact, but is so infectious, that not even condoms are a reliable method of protection. Every year thousands of people die from this STD, so when Gardasil was approved by the FDA, it provided medical professionals with huge relief.

The vaccine protects against infection from four strains of the human papilloma virus, or HPV. Two of these strains, HPV-16 and HPV-18, account for about 70% of cervical cancers. The other two strains covered by the vaccine, HPV- 6 and HPV-11, account for about 90% of genital warts. (women.webmd)
