If you’re ever in Maine, and if you don’t have plans to go to Maine, maybe you should make ‘em NOW, pull off on Exit 7 off the Maine Turnpike (the exit right before the toll) make a left turn on Route One and head north 6 miles to Cape Neddick. On the right hand side of the road you’ll find a little hot dog stand named “Flo’s”. Since 1959 Flo’s has been open from 11 am until 3 pm (sharp!) every day except Wednesday. Your dogs are cooked to order, make sure you order enough, because you don’t wanna get back in line for seconds! Order the House dog. It’s a steamed, snappy wiener on a delightfully fresh steamed bun. The toppings are Flo’s special sauce, mayo and a little celery salt. It might look a bit repulsive on paper, but boy does it taste great!! You can get all the regular condiments, but, “When at Flo’s…..!” There’s a couple more locations, one in Kittery at the trading post and one in Moody. Those are open later. But, if it’s a one-time-visit…you need to go to the original for the whole experience. Flo is long gone, but Gail, who’s owned it for years is right there boiling your lunch! Flo’s relish is on sale on-line and in select stores around New England. Check their website. You can use it to jazz up chicken, eggs, pizza, and more! mmmm!
