Derek Cohen, the Senior Web Architect at Trend Hunter, could listen to Neil Diamond holiday parody songs at any time of year. When he's not doing his job as one of the major coding magicians behind the scenes at Trend Hunter, Cohen can be found expanding his love of basketball, playing video games and cuddling his pet guinea pig.
How do you define cool?
I think cool is being comfortable with yourself. I think if you like to wear a suit and that makes you feel cool and you can do cool things wearing a suit, that's all fine and dandy. If you're a jeans and a t-shirt kind of person and you feel comfortable that way, the things you do will be cool if you're comfortable.
What's your favorite trend and why?
Since the holidays are coming up, my favorite trend has to do with holiday parody songs. This one in particular is the Chanukah Song covered by Neil Diamond originally by Adam Sandler. I particularly like the Chanukah Song because when it comes on at Christmas, half my family is Jewish and the other half isn't. It's nice to get some songs about the Jewish faith in there too. It's usually with a lot of comedy and all in good fun.
What's your favorite thing about working at Trend Hunter?
My favorite thing about working at Trend Hunter is every Friday there's free beer. In all seriousness, my projects get seen by people all around the world and that's really exciting.
What's your favorite accomplishment
My favorite accomplishment since I'm only 22, is probably graduating university. I was in school from when I was three to age 22. I was in school for 19 years, and it's only just recently all over.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was little I always wanted to be a divorce lawyer. I figured they made a lot of money, so that would be a good way to go.
What inspires or excites you?
Probably one of the things that inspires me the most in my life is the NBA. I watch a ton of basketball. They're just super athletes who play 82 games a season. It's serious work ethic in those guys.
What's your cool prediction for the future?
The trend I see in the future is cars that drive themselves. Google is doing a ton of testing right now to drive hundreds of thousands of miles just automated, with no driver or manual driver. Personally, I have a license, but I really hate driving, so it seems good for me. Less stress and I just can't stand being on the road.
What advice would you give to the business world?
My advice to the business world is to appease your developers. We're the ones putting out the new products and as long as you keep us happy, our technology will keep moving forward.
Is there anything you'd like to add about Trend Hunter?
I love working behind the scenes at Trend Hunter where we get to develop all over the site and have our stuff seen by millions of people!
