In a time when quirky pop culture-fueled blogs seem to be popping up every day, Natalya Lobanova's 'happy 2 b sad' Tumblr has risen above the rest and secured a spot as one of my all-time faves. The London-based illustrator creates refreshingly honest, candid and witty drawings commenting on the life of a typical teenager or twenty-something living in the Internet age.
Looking through the 'happy 2 b sad' collection, it's hard to choose my favorite. I'll be the first to admit that Lobanova's somewhat self-deprecating comments like, "Sorry I can't go out tonight I'm too busy being fat," are all-too relevant to my life on some weekends. Others drawings express even more common everyday frustrations, like one that sarcastically comments on annoying birds chirping loudly at four in the morning.
The 'happy 2 b sad' Tumblr really does have something for everyone, and shows that clever commentary and simple design can go a very long way.
