If you want to introduce more whimsy to your dessert decorating, this watercolor graffiti cake is a feminine place to begin. From the blog Sprinkle Bakes the colorful chocolate cake is a beautiful treat for a variety of celebratory events, from birthdays to baby showers.

A fondant-covered cake, such as Rosie Alyea's Chocolate Butter Cake, makes a blank canvas for you to try your artistic skills upon. You will need gel food coloring in a few different colors, sponge stipplers and clear vanilla extract or vodka as well. When you overlap hues like magenta, purple and turquoise and then press a paper towel on the finished product before it dries, you can get the same effect as this watercolor graffiti cake. She also used gold leaf for garnish.
