Giant Egg Hunt - Marks Return of Condor
[Edit]
On March 25, 2007, Dr. Mike Wallace of the Zoological Society of San Diego and some colleagues found a Condor egg in an abandoned eagle’s nest in the Sierra San Pedro de Martir National Park, Mexico. The Condor has not bred in Mexico in over 75 years.
The bird is the largest in North America with a 10 foot wingspan. In 2002, biologists gave captive birds to the Mexican government, but it takes years for them to reproduce.
The Condor Recovery Program was formed in 1982 and is sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and “several Mexican Groups.” The current population of Condors world-wide is estimated at only 280, with only 100 represented in the State of California, USA.
Why are Condors an endangered species? A Condor and an egg are lying in bed. The Condor is leaning against the headboard smoking a Cohiba with a satisfied smile on its face. The egg, looking a bit pis*ed off, grabs the sheet and rolls over and says “Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question.”
