Memorial Bikes - NYC Ghost Bike Project Pays Tribute to Deceased Cyclists [Edit]

Ghost bikes are a phenomenon from New York - a memorial to those cyclists killed on the roads of the city. At traffic blackspots all over New York, white bicycles decorated with photographs of the victims, are found. Most often appearing overnight.

The two lobby groups behind them try to find a bike close in style to that ridden by the victim. They then remove parts such as brake cables and let the air out of the tyres, to discourage thieves, and paint them in DayGlo white.

To be perfectly honest I am not sure what I think of this, though it is undoubtedly taking off. People are killed in cars every day too, some in accidents by avoiding cyclists.

The idea has already been taken up in several cities across America, and there are plans to bring it to London. 'In 2005, 24 cyclists were killed in New York, twice the number of the previous year,' Leah Todd of Time's Up said. 'So we introduced the ghost bikes. The main reason is to have a memorial to the person who died, a place where friends and family can visit and leave flowers and pictures. But the bikes also raise awareness about the terrible way cyclists are treated.' (telegraph)

"People are killed in cars every day too, some in accidents by avoiding cyclists." I'd like to see some data to back up this statement. While it's true that there are many automobile-related fatalities daily, when it comes to automobile/bicyle accidents, the cyclists most often lose. We forget that driving around in a ton of steel doesn't free you from the responsibility of being aware of your environement. Entitlement to the road is a hot-button issue, but everyone on the road needs to be more aware and considerate of each other.
