A Los Angeles real estate mogul plans to build animated billboards in LA modeled after the huge billboards in the cult classic film of the 1980’s Blade Runner. Sonny Astani, who says he has seen the movie about five times, plans two build two 14-story LED digital billboards that will mimic the monster animated billboards that can be seen in the opening sequence of the film.

The second picture in the gallery is from Blade Runner. I believe the leading picture is a mock-up of what Astani’s billboards will look like.

Astani's signs will appear on the sides of adjacent condo towers being constructed in downtown LA. The idea, pending city approval, is to install hundreds of rows of LEDs, each spaced 6 inches apart, across the buildings' floor-to-ceiling windows. Residents will be able to see out, but viewed from a distance the pixel-like lights will coalesce into an image. Now if only he could get some kind of android workforce to build them. (wired)

This is cool only because of the Blade Runner reference. Large LED screens on the sides of buildings are the 'norm' these days. The size of these proposed billboards is something of note but there are plenty of folks in the world looking at REALLY large billboards and not a week goes by without someone announcing another (proposed) world's biggest LED screen. We wrote about this proposed 12 metre x 50 metre one in Manchester recently ... http://www.dailydooh.com/archives/858
