Four Square - Silicon Valley Geeks Bring Back Classic Game (VIDEO)

When I was a kid in Jersey, we called this game “Box Ball”. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s always entertaining to see what Silicon Valley’s geek-elite do to amuse themselves when they’re away from their PCs. “Four Square” actually requires physical effort, some coordination, and it involves a ball—three things the classic geek avoided in the past. Maybe, behind the safety of their corporate walls, and in the company of other geeks, they can finally let loose! Maybe this will give them the opportunity to pursue the playground game that, in their youth, would have lead to some very painful atomic wedgies.

Four square also gets bonus points as a recruiting tool. Vijay Raghunathan, a 26-year-old "code monkey" and former Yahoo foosball champ, was won over by a four square game during his job interview. "It's rare that a game of foosball gets your blood going that much," he said. Part of the attraction is that four square helps bridge the classic divide between geeks and "suits," promoting the kind of teamwork essential to building successful products, said Daniel Bernstein, a 25-year-old "marketing dude" and one of Meebo's most aggressive players.
