The world’s first wooden Sports car has a lightweight and sculptural design by young American student Joe Harmon.  The hand-crafted car is made as much as possible from wood, and the exterior shell has a moulded wood composite skin.  Viewers can see him perfecting the prototype via a webcam to his workshop in North Carolina. The ambitious recent graduate conceived of the Splinter is a research project, but there is definately a market and an interest in this innovative luxury design. 

The 4.6 meter-long, two-seater "Splinter" car, made from maple, plywood and MDF, has a 4.6 liter V8 petrol engine and a six-speed gearbox. Splinter weighs 1,134 kilograms -- 240 kilograms less than the lightweight Porsche 911 GT3. (newlaunches)
