When I heard the story that farmers were spray painting the word “cow” on their cattle to warn game hunters of mistakenly shooting cows instead of deer, I consulted my trusty search engine to find out if there was any truth to this simplistic but funny-sounding preventative measure. I found that this actually did happen circa 1970, and that the cows were mistaken for moose. I can only speculate that the farmland was nearby hunting grounds, and that some hunters must have thought they were lucky in finding some rather large, slow-moving moose. It’s a good thing this practice isn’t common place, as the “Cow” tattoo or branding isn’t flattering in any font. References: snopesFiled In: |
