Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a fascination with downhill and speed - it’s probably why I like luge. To me it seemed like a no-brainer to invent a sport that brings together ice and speed in a new way - Downhill Ice Skating.

While I’ve yet to see that sport on the docket of the Olympic games, roller blader Dirk Auer has come the closest with his feat of going down a rollercoaster wearing his beloved blades - or should I say, his 110 hours worth of specially modified blades.

Auer also holds the land speed record for bladers going 190 mph as he was pulled behind a Prsche GT.

Says the 36-year-old: "The roller caster is wooden and so unlike rides made from iron and steel there was always a chance of the odd nail or screw that would not be entirely flat. If the skates were to catch a stray nail then I could have fallen and I would almost certainly have died." (dvice)
