A Bangladeshi-born artist is using tape as a way to mask her earlier works, and has created new pieces of artwork in the process. Using tape has now become the signature style of Rana Begum’s work, and is what made the world really take notice of her unique paintings. Based in London now, her bright works are a blending of linear colours and an innovative approach to modern art.
She’s partial to using odd media, especially customised strips of brightly-coloured electrical tape, which, following rigid geometric patterns, create paintings that can make your eyeballs tingle and your blood spontaneously change group. In Dubai this week, for her debut solo show at the The Third Line, Time Out discovers an artist enthralled with colour, light and form, a new-generation Islamic artist who confidently deploys Western styles and influences.
