This is extremely ecologically cool and really helps the environment and all but it is pretty gross. Researchers at EAWAG Aquatic Research in Switzerland have developed a simple way to extract the phosphorus and nitrogen from urine to be used as fertilizer. Untreated urine reaches the oceans, feeding algae causing algae blooms (aka Red Tides) which soak up all the oxygen and suffocate fish. Cultivating the nutrients makes urine harmless to wildlife.

A DIY kit for turning your pee into fertilizer will be available at the Drinkpee exhibit which explores the role of our bodies and byproducts in larger ecosystems.
