Travel Hot Spots - The Door to Hell in Turkmenistan (VIDEO)

In the middle of the desert near Darvaz, Turkmenistan, there is a giant hole in the ground that locals refer to as The Door To Hell. One look at this hot spot justifies this distinction. As the story behind The Door to Hell goes, geologists were drilling for natural gas and hit an underground cavern. The rig and drilling camp fell into the cavernous pit. Some say that the drill rig’s fall ignited the natural gas, while others say that the geologists ignited the gas to prevent poisonous gas from coming out of the hole. Over thirty years later, The Door to Hell is still burning as brightly as ever. Source: englishrussia Via: neatorama |
