Researchers at Loughborough University have developed a new truck cab design -- dubbed the Direct Vision -- that would offer truck drivers a better view of the road around them, potentially lowering collisions and saving the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. The researchers say this redesigned cab would offer a 50% increase in the front and side fields of view compared to traditional cabs.

The increased visibility is accomplished thanks to an 80 cm-long cab with a rounder nose, larger glazed areas, a smaller dashboard and a lower seated position for the driver. Put together, these features contrive to reduce the blind spots responsible for many accidents.

The Direct Vision truck cab design now faces the challenge of convincing companies that switching to these truck cab designs is worth the associated cost.
