The BiliCam App Can Detect Jaundice in Babies

BiliCam is an app that helps parents easily detect jaundice in their babies using their smartphone. Jaundice is quite common in babies but can be fatal. The disease is caused by the buildup of a substance called bilirubin in blood and body tissues. Excell bilirubin can cause the skin to be tinged yellow.
The app helps detect jaundice in babies during the first few days after they go home. Parents simply have to take a picture of their baby with an included color key laid on the baby's belly. The information is then sent to a cloud where an algorithm determines if the parents should get their child tested for jaundice.
The app is still in the testing phase, but its developers hope to get into doctors' hands for further testing before seeking FDA approval.
