Toy makers fear a backlash from angry consumers over the recalling of 19 million Chinese produced toys by Mattel because of either lead paint or small magnets that can be accidentally swallowed. Sources say Mattel is preparing itself for the worst case scenario of angry who of parents who’s children have been exposed to the potential threats.
For toy makers, it is beginning to look as if it may be a rough Christmas.
Industry analysts are wondering whether toy makers will be able to reassure parents and government officials that toys shipped to America are safe.
"For each additional recall and each story in the news about harmful products, the risks of impacting holiday sales increases," said Erik Kolb, toy industry analyst for Standard and Poor's Equity Research. "There's no doubt that this poses a risk to the entire industry."
