The biggest challenge Mike Jenson (of Jenson Architects) faced when designing the 'Turner Residence,' was reconciling the contemporary home design with the wooded beauty of the site. To preserve the natural surroundings, Jenson opted to build into, rather than onto, the site's hill, effectively lessening the impact of the structure on the ridge.

Even partially sunken into the site, the home offers spectacular views of Mount Tamalpais. To take advantage of the views, the architects decided to arrange the social spaces of the home on its top level. The transparent pavilion that serves as the home's pinnacle thus contains the kitchen, dining and living areas, which open towards the pool and outdoor terrace.

The plinth below, which is grounded into the site, houses the remaining bathrooms, bedrooms and garage.
