Every year, the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) publishes a color-coded guide to coffee titled the 'Coffee Taster’s Flavor Wheel.' After 20 years of using the same flavor wheel, the SCAA has finally released a more user-friendly guide.
The original purpose of the Coffee Taster’s Flavor Wheel was to bring everyone involved in the coffee supply chain together through a shared vocabulary. However, the newly updated flavor wheel makes this information more accessible with a design that has been described as "more descriptive and less jargon-y." This is a particularity important update as the coffee industry has changed dramatically over the years due to the effects of climate change and the rise of boutique coffee roasters. Thanks to the new lexicon, everyone from farmers to baristas will be able to understand and identify coffee’s primary sensory qualities.
