'Rug Your City' is a project that makes city-inspired rug designs. The project asks everyday people to send in pictures taken in their home cities, which will then be used as inspiration to create handmade rugs.
Using cities as the visual inspiration for rugs is nothing new, in fact it is an ancient practice in Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan among many others. Using the city as the basis for rug designs was done to preserve local cultures -- an art that has since been lost. It is common to see rugs named after specific cities, which act as a visual time-capsule of a given time and place.
Floorplan Rugs is trying to reinvigorate notions of culture and locality through art with Rug Your City. Rug Your City wants to combine elements of tradition and modernity by using an ancient methodology with modern photography and design. Its goal is to create unique, functional snapshots of today's contemporary cities.
