When the midnight hour strikes in NYC, glow sticks magically begin to appear. Where the beautiful people gather, Kentucky’s addictive little magic leaf, demon tobacco, starts to gnaw at the yellow fingers of the rich and powerful. Cigarette smoking is banned in the Big Apple, but proving once again that the chemical is more powerful than Hizzoner, hot clubs are starting to put ashtrays out when the late night crowd arrives, and even offering up the classic cigarette girl again. When the martini’s are $19 a pop, seems a little fine from the city is just the cost of doing business.
"The general consensus," says blogger Daniel, "is that New York isn't as fun as it used to be—and cigarette smoke is a visceral reminder of the good old days. And a much better one than glow sticks." One metrosexual assistant fashion stylist, 32, is similarly dismissive: "Like there aren't enough things to worry about right now?" he snorts. "No one has to go to a bar. It's not like I'm walking around Target with a cigarette in my mouth!"
