Cupcakes and Cashmere’s ‘Cigarette Russes’ are modeled after the ones found in Martha Stewart’s cookbook. Chilled vanilla-flavored batter is rolled and dipped here into dark bittersweet chocolate, and it is this dipping process that mimics the appearance of cigarettes.

This dessert is both unusual and practical. It can be made relatively quickly (should the batter be cooled in advance), and can also yield up to 40 thin straws. This makes the dish a simple party favor, and as Cupcakes and Cashmere founder Emily Schuman points out, it can be dressed up with tied ribbons.

There is a considerable DIY aspect to the Cigarette Russes recipe. While still warm, the chocolate can easily be topped off with walnuts, sprinkles or dried fruit.
