Want to attend a Christmas mass without the discomfort of leaving your home (or computer)?  St. Michael’s Cathedral and St. Basil’s Church (both in Toronto) broadcast a daily feed on TV and YouTube.

What makes this interesting isn’t the idea of religion on television, but rather, that a local parish is broadcasting to its own community.  My grandma would have watched every day!

The project was coordinated by the National Catholic Broadcasting Council who notes, “It is becoming increasingly apparent that television is where people of every culture and condition gather to be informed and where the rival values of our society compete for our allegiance.”

In this video, “Fr. Busch delivers the entire Daily Mass in 3 parts, from the English-speaking Catholic Bishops of Canada and St. Basil’s Church in Toronto.”

Very cool! But imagine the entire family is over and join in the carols.. could be scary, the beauty of a live choir is that no one hears Uncle Larry's horrid Mr. Bean singing voice, or your sister's tone-deaf attempt at singing soprano. Jokes aside, this is a really great idea, especially for those who can't physically attend mass.

I'm a pastor at a church that is doing a lot of this type of thing. I think it's a micro-advertising thing that is quite effective. Most people will want to see a service online before wanting to come to your church in person. And you can do it really simply with ustream.tv, a video camera, and a decent web connection. Two side benefits: - People who can't leave the house (for whatever reason) can watch. - Lots of people from all over the world watch. Not sure "why" but it is interesting.
