McDonald's recently began testing a new chicken sausage patty as a healthy alternative to its pork-based breakfast sandwiches. Not only have fast food restaurants been directing more attention to their morning menus, but they have also been tweaking their breakfast fare to make it more nutritious. This new McDonald's breakfast option demonstrates an ongoing effort to appeal to health-conscious consumers.

The new Sausage McMuffin from McDonald's consists of a chicken sausage patty served on a toasted English muffin with a slice of American cheese. The new patty is designed to serve as a healthy breakfast option that comes in at less than 280 calories.

The new sandwich follows an ongoing shift towards healthier items with the introduction of egg whites back in 2013, the adding of kale to the McDonald's salad mix last year and the current effort to swap regular yogurt for protein-rich Greek yogurt in the parfaits.
