With celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and Jessica Alba speaking out against the need for childhood vaccinations, there’s a very good chance that less famous parents will follow suit and reduce the number of vaccinations their own children receive. On the side of the issue, celebrity Amanda Peet has taken the opposite stance, calling parents who do not vaccinate their children “parasites” who benefit from the vaccinations of other children while shielding their own children from the risks of vaccination. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, Honor Marie, Alba was quoted talking about her own childhood sickness, saying, “Ive come to think that perhaps I was a product of my environment or the vaccines, or something my mother took when she was pregnant.” Jenny McCarthy’s position has been made even more public, due to the fact that her son is autistic. Like many parents struggling to cope with the reasons for their child’s problems, she has pointed the finger at childhood vaccines on more than one occasion. While McCarthy doesn’t entirely condemn vaccinations, she strongly recommends that parents take the time to question the vaccine schedules recommended to them by physicians. Whether vaccines are the problem, the solution, or some mixture of the two is not something we can be sure of at this point in time. What we do know, however, is that celebrities have an enormous hold on the opinions of the general public, and that fewer vaccinated children could lead to a resurgence in formerly “dead” illnesses.
