A selection of 14 Los Angeles-based architecture firms designed these functional, cute and downright bizarre outdoor cat shelters. The shelters were displayed for one night only to raise money for FixNation, a charitable organization dedicated to minimizing cat populations through humane methods. The resulting shelters vary wildly in their shape, size and sheer practicality.

HOK's shelter has a wooden roof and faux-grass, and may well become the standard for 21st century communal cat housing.

Some of the cat shelters, such as Abramson Teiger Architects' entry, are rather luxurious and plush and suited towards high-maintenance felines. Others such as the 6Formation Association + Edgar Arceneaux entry would be well-suited towards the more hippie and environmentally conscious cat, as its slatted design allows for passive cooling and the shelter as a whole is low-impact.
