'Caruso St John Architects' recently unveiled plans for a new research building that is covered in a layer of cast glass. When it comes to research facilities, the emphasis is usually placed on the equipment inside, rather than the building design. This firm wants to design a modern laboratory that is breathtaking from the inside out.

The firm's concept design features mock-ups for a biomedical laboratory at the University of Basel in Switzerland. The team plans to construct a 35,000-square-meter building that is covered in a skin of cast glass. The glass exterior is completely transparent, meaning those inside will have an unobstructed view of the outdoors. The base of the building features strategically placed hollows, which provide a designated entrance way. Inside the building, the designers plans to construct enough offices, conferences rooms and testing laboratories for 70 different research groups.

The glass-paneled building demonstrates how architectural firms are bringing modern design to medical facilities.
