Police have been raiding pot-growing operations all along the east coast of the US; over 70 grow houses in the State of Georgia alone during the last 6 weeks. Ordinary looking suburban middle class homes that have been functioning as indoor marijuana farms can yield over $3 million annually.

In 2006, the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) busted operations earning over $6.4 billion in the US.

Grow houses are using hydroponics technology and 24-hour lighting to produce more plants. Hydroponics employs a nutrient solution, rather than soil, to grow the cannabis.  Police have been relying on tip-offs and local power companies to report suspicious activities.

Makes you want to become a volunteer fire fighter, doesn’t it?

Grow houses have been a problem for years in California and Canada, but investigators are now seeing scores of them in the South and New England. In the past six weeks alone, more than 70 have been uncovered in northern Georgia _ nearly 10 times last year's total for the entire state. Only one was busted in 2005. Indoor pot farms also have been discovered in recent months in residential areas of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina and Florida. (In fact, the phenomenon has inspired a cable TV show, "Weeds," starring Mary-Louise Parker as a single mom who grows and deals pot out of her suburban home.) (comcast.net)
