Bust sculptures are a traditional art form that display only the chest and head of figures. The art form is supposed to recreate only the important characteristics of an individual. If this is true, Livio Scapella's bust sculptures have saddening and terrifying characteristics.
The Italian artist sculpted the heads to look as though they are shrouded. Beneath the linen which restricts them, they are crying out for help, look depressed and sorrowful. They also seem as though they are fighting an eternal conflict and are trapped souls.
The Renaissance-inspired work is titled 'Ghosts Underground.' While they may be ghostly, they still exude beauty; their chests contain large, illuminating chunks of quartz and amethyst stones.
