The newest additions to the menu at Starbucks are a line of three breakfast pastry treats called Savory Foldovers. Croissant dough is used to form the bed of the pastries, which hold various ingredients in the Pepperoni & Tomato, Ham & Cheese and Wheat & Spinach Foldovers.

Following the development of the Cronut and other hybrid food items, it's becoming apparent that consumers are more than open to experimentation with flavor and texture, especially if a croissant is involved in the mix.

Savory flavors are often neglected in the food industry, but the rise in popularity of artisan dishes and the emergence of savory flavors in desserts, drinks and bakery items reflects how influential this flavor profile is becoming.
