Social media has been an incubation ground for the body positive movement. Some Instagrammers and bloggers who use their platforms to embrace their imperfect bodies have strong female followings as many women are both inspired and feel connected to them.

Los Angeles based blogger Simone Mariposa is one of those women who has participated in the body positive movement. She wanted to push back against common stereotypes regarding what plus-size women can or can't wear and recently posted a photo of herself in a bikini with the hashtag #WeWearWhatWeWant. It went viral and inspired many other women to do the same. Selfies with motivating tweets were plastered all over Twitter.

The viral hashtag should motivate media and businesses to alter their offerings and messages to appeal to the plus-sized community. Fashion brand Torrid is one company that recognized the need plus-sized women had and developed its products specifically for them.
