Black National Anthem (4 Videos) - Singer Replaces Words of ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ (VIDEO) [Edit]

Jazz Artist Rene Marie shocked her audience when she sung the words to the ‘Black National Anthem’ to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner.  Just on time for July 4th!

The singer was in front of the audience at Denver’s State of the City Address.  Only her husband and musical adviser knew she would swap in the Black National Anthem.

Many were notably upset, including Denver’s Mayor, John Hickenlooper (great name by the way… just say it, “Hickenlooper.” Wow.) Hickenlooper noted, “If anyone has got a right to be angry it’s probably me… I guess what I feel most is just deeply disappointed.”

City Councilman Charlie Brown added, “There is no substitute for the national anthem.”

But if there WAS a substitute, would this be it?  Although it is colloquially referred to as the ‘Black National Anthem’, the song is actually a hymn titled, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’.

By the way, Rene Marie still received applause by the crowd… although most news reports cut that part out.

BUT, these following news reports suggests things were more ‘embarrassing’ than my commentary might suggest:

I do not believe that she should apologize. For years, I have wished the words to the national anthem could be changed. My reason is that it is too much about war and I am about peace. I hated singing that anthem in school (not to mention how difficult the tune is.) It is not titled "The Black National Anthem". Someone just decided to nick name it that. It has all the words necessary for giving strength to those who are war-weary, like me. The battle to overcome racism is still raging, but the fights seem to me to be less painful in the past decade. Equality can happen, maybe sooner than they think. I am white and I tell you this only because I am sure someone has already identified me as black, based upon my opinions. I think she sang it beautifully, too! But, it won't make me vote for Obama. That won't happen, since I truly feel he does not have the necessary experience to deal with the problems this country is facing. If they want racism to end, the best place to start is at the voting booth, by voting as color blind, and only for those who can really do the job. I read an article about 93 year old "Sweetie Pie" who will vote for Obama, merely because she never thought she would see the day that she could vote for a black president. At her age, I would think she would teach her children and theirs the right way to vote for president. When people like her have finally ended their racist tirade, then we may rid ourselves of racism. In the mean time, I see nothing wrong with the words this lady sang. I only have one complaint. She said it was taking artistic expression, but no, it is purely political expression. At a time when we need to eliminate race from the process, this disappoints me.

Wow! At a time when we are about to elect the first African American President of the United States, we are about to become the most racially devided in our history. It is not because we have not made great progress in diversity and understanding, we have made that progress. We are at a point of great relations among all races in this country, however, because of the racial activism of a few vocal and bigoted members of the black community, there will be a retreat into the dark days of racial hatred. I am talking about when Obama gets elected, these activists will think their time is due to take over the mainstream and they will push their way into every corner of every other culture and demand their due. Get ready for the dark days ahead. This disrespect for the National Anthem is just the start.

Before I listened to the actual video, I was offended by the title "Black National Anthem". Rene and her husband probably aren't the ones who gave it that title, because if you actually listen to the words, it's very touching. She formed that song to a melody that she(we) obviously admire(s). I commend her for her courage, in these times that all Americans are facing and I believe she did it for us. Look back at the changes that our nation has endured and how pathetic it is that some tired politician goes on the over-rated media and claims she owes us apology. I'm sorry for your ignorance. There's an apology. By the way who is apologizing for gas prices that are driving my family and friends out of their hard earned homes and any normal way of living. I have never caught on to racism and I teach my children that we all thrive from the same beating heart, no matter what our appearance. I just found a lot of comfort and love in the song that she sang, so thank you Rene for reaching out in this time where so many are afraid to even speak a simple opinion, let alone sing a song of grace. May the "big guy" bless you all, Michelle
