Black Keys tap Danger Mouse
[Edit]
Rolling off the success of their most widely received album to date, Magic Potion, the Ohio-Blues-duo, the Black Keys, have assembled in studio with Danger Doom heavy-weight, Danger Mouse. The new production is sure to add some polish to the Keys’ otherwise low-fi identity. But at what cost? Without the benefit of huge financial backing or high end productions, Dan and Pat have put together 4 of the best, most well rounded and timeless rock albums of the past two decades. They are the embodiment of substance without sensationalism, in rock. I’m not one to fear change, but as a long time Keys fan I’m wondering what exactly Danger Mouse can bring to the Black Keys’ already fantastic formula; sincerity + credibility (re: praise from Junior Kimbrough’s widow) + authenticity = rock’s unlikely saviours.
If nothing else, DMs presence as producer is sure to bring some well deserved publicity to the Key’s new album. I only hope it doesn’t do so by sacrificing what made them one of my favourite bands.
