It’s obvious that the Dutch are not afraid of the sea, with 20% of the country being below sea level. The sea doesn’t seem to bring them fear or destruction, it brings them surprises. Big beach surprises. Remember the mysterious big lego figure that washed ashore in Zandvoort in the Netherlands last year? Well, that’s not the only strange thing that has been found on the beaches of the Netherlands.

On one of the Western Frisian Islands, an island called Schiermonnikoog, three giant grand pianos were found on the beach. It is not clear where they came from or when they washed ashore, but they are there and they are big!

The island is not known to be an island of giants, but it does have a classical music festival in October each year. So the grand pianos might have got something to do with that festival. There is no mention of the pianos on their website though so this has not been confirmed.

Here are some links: More pictures: http://www.baraskit.se/random/archive/82/giant_piano.html and here the quote from http://www.florentijnhofman.nl/ Florentijn Hofman's site who claimed it : Title: Signpost 5 Year: 2006 Location: Schiermonnikoog Afmeting: 3 x 8 x 6 x 5 meters Materials: wood Assigned by: Internationaal Kamermuziek Festival Schiermonnikoog In participation with: Jasper van der Made With help from: Marco, Gunnar, Jochem, Wouter, Peter, Ed, Kim, Brechtje and the family Talsma sponsored by: Ubbens Bouwstoffen b.v. For the fifth anniversary of the Schiermonnikoog International Chamber Music Festival, I came up with a concept of grand pianos washed upon the shore. The refer to stranded cargo and ditto whales. To be salvaged or saved; in any case to be wondered and surprised about. To one person it’s of value beyond measure, the other looks upon it as being just derelict wood.

So this would be Florentijn's idea? I like the comparison of stranded whales.
