Ellen Su helped to design a line of high-tech back braces for children diagnosed with scoliosis. Scoliosis is a serve back condition that often develops right before a child hits puberty. In order to prevent the condition from worsening, children are required to wear a plastic brace for several years.
While traditional back braces are effective, it is difficult for doctors to know if children are wearing them as often as they should be. In order to ensure that a child is wearing their back brace at all times, Su designed a smart scoliosis brace. The new brace is designed by 'Wellinks' and is equipped with smart straps that provide insight as to how long the device has be worn for. The module links to an accompanying smartphone app that doctors can use to gauge their patient's progress.
The high-tech device helps physicians and parents determine whether a child is receiving the correct treatment for their condition.
